There is a fresh resurgence to honor this city’s street of jazz, Indiana Avenue. The Urban Arts Consortium of Indianapolis Inc. in conjunction with the Madame Walker Theater Center and Jazz Line Inc. are presenting a multifaceted Indiana Avenue Renaissance Festival Sept. 10-14. On Thursday, Sept. 11 a Poetry Jam with guest artists will be held in the Walker’s fourth floor Casino Ballroom. Friday, Sept. 12 Jazz on the Avenue from 6:30-10:30 p.m. will feature Mary Moss, a vocalist who will be celebrating her Pre Birthday Bash! Blues on the Canal will start at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13. Sunday, Sept. 14 from noon-6 p.m. there will be a free Avenue Culture Stage with arts, crafts, food and live entertainment, with reunions paying tribute to the legendary clubs of Indiana Avenue: Cotton Club, George’s Bar, Rainbow Room, Sunset, Place to Play and Doyals. Another traditional late summer outdoor event is the free French Market presented by St. Joan of Arc Church at 4217 Central Ave. Saturday, Sept. 13 from 11:30 a.m.-11 p.m. Activities for the whole family are available, including a children’s area and French menu of 12 specialties along with a beer and wine garden, artisans and a bake sale. The Jazz Kitchen at 54th and College has a special new series pairing some of Indy’s best jazz performers in a creative setting for new sounds with sets at 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. A major jazz recording artist makes his Indy debut Saturday, Sept. 13 when brilliantly swinging pianist Monty Alexander’s Trio plays two shows.
