Weekend live comedy preview

Michael Malone is this weeks top pick, performing at Mortys
  • Michael Malone is this week's top pick, performing at Morty's

As a writer, it's often dangerously easy to stick with what you know. In my case, I know Crackers. It's like "Cheers" to me— except for instead of everyone knowing my name, there are maybe two people that know my name. I've been doing reviews there long enough that I can call there at the last minute on a Friday afternoon and do a review the same night. I know where to park, what time to get there, what I'm going to order, and where all the best and worst seats are.

But I had an epiphany this week; I need to diversify. I have completely disregarded Morty's, which is irresponsible and lazy journalism on my part. I had my reasons: it's a 45 minute drive (made worse by an ailing transmission and rapidly approaching wedding date), they usually don't bring in big names, and the one time I went there I had a bad experience. The food was bad, the show and the food were overpriced, and the comedian was boring. They closed for a reason. However, that was a couple years ago, and since their reopening this winter, management and (from what I've gathered) the general business model has changed.

I've often advocated Morty's as a necessary competitor to Crackers; the city needs at least two major players to keep things interesting. But in my contentedness with Crackers I've missed out big time on a local boy with some really good stuff— Michael Malone.

I don't know his story, and I just looked him up for the first time tonight, but I am excited to see his show tomorrow. I feel silly for not seeing him sooner— I am a huge proponent of local comics with talent, and from what I saw online, it seems like he has the tools.

Again— this is premature and based only on a ten-minute video clip, but his comedy is positive, well-paced and engaging— if a little traditional. I know, that's about as painfully general of a description as a person can give, but at this point anything more detailed would be premature.

Next, I need to start getting down to the Bloomington venues. I'm so out of touch down there that I've been calling The Comedy Attic the "Funny Bone" for the last few months. I knew that the name had changed; the mix up was because the website name is still www.funnybonebtown.com, and I just never changed it after one erroneous weekend lineup many blogs ago.

But regardless of the reason for the name miscue, the mistake is a symptom of a deeper issue; there's been a disconnect between me and some really good clubs in the area. More diversity of coverage is afoot.
