Heartland Film Festival
Oct. 18-26

The Heartland Film Festival is set to return this October with its most diverse lineup yet, according to Jeff Sparks, president and CEO of Heartland Truly Moving Pictures.

Sparks announced the festival’s lineup at Wednesday evening’s Crystal Heart Awards Celebration, where Heartland Film Festival volunteers and sponsors were given a sneak peak at a few of the films to be featured this year.

Now in its 16th year, the festival kicks off on Oct. 18 with a showing of “August Rush” at the IMAX Theater. The film, starring Keri Russell and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, chronicles a musically-gifted boy’s quest to reunite with his long-lost birth parents. Producer Richard Barton Lewis and one cast member are scheduled to appear for a Q&A session at the Eiteljorg Museum following the screening.

A showing of “The Kite Runner” will close the festival on Oct. 26. Based on Khaled Hosseini’s best-selling novel of the same name, “The Kite Runner” is a story of forgiveness and redemption, set in Afghanistan through the fall of the monarchy to the rise of the Taliban regime.

Among the special events featured this year is the Crystal Heart Awards Ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 20. Conseco Fieldhouse will be the site of this year’s ceremony, during which $200,000 in cash prizes will be awarded to filmmakers — “the largest cash prizes of any film festival in the world,” Sparks says. The 16 films set to receive a Crystal Heart and Jimmy Stewart Memorial Crystal Heart award were selected from a pool of 619 international submissions.

Also putting in an appearance at this year’s festival will be Mark Zoradi, president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Group. Zoradi will be at the Indiana Historical Center on Sunday, Oct. 21 to speak with the audience and present clips from upcoming Disney releases, including “Enchanted.”

Tickets for all screenings and events are available for purchase beginning Sept. 6. Heartland preview guides are available at select local Marsh supermarkets and branches of the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library.
