Web exclusive: The best of IndyTube.tv? Not yet

WNDY (Channel 23)

A few weeks ago, LIN TV, the parent company of local stations WISH, WNDY and WIIH, launched a local version of YouTube called IndyTube.tv in hopes of reaching out to Central Indiana's young demographic. You know, those kids and what my friend Ed Johnson-Ott calls their "now-a-go-go lifestyles."

Now "the best" of those videos are coming to television on “The Best of IndyTube.tv,” a show hosted by WZPL-FM (99.5) morning man Dave Smiley.

Putting more local programming on WNDY is a great idea, but before premiering the IndyTube show, it would have been smart to wait for quality content. The rough cut I saw was painful.

On the plus side, though, it's possible the show will be updated and improved before airtime as new content is uploaded to the Web site. (The quality of the content will determine how often this show airs. It could be weekly, monthly or never again.)

What I watched — and what you may or may not see — was Smiley counting down the 10 "best" videos, which include a dog eating snow, a little girl singing “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” and a dog with a stuffed animal in its mouth trying to retrieve a ball.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but I hope you don't have to suffer through these videos, which are breathtakingly bad. And not in a "so bad you have to watch" way, either. The ones that are supposed to be funny aren't, and the ones intended to be cute should have stayed in the family video collections. They are uniformly unfit for mass consumption.

In addition to the Top 10, the early version of Saturday's show featured a perfectly bland local music video and an "interview of the week" with ex-Pacer Ron Artest predicting who'll win the Super Bowl. How timely.

The good news is “The Best of IndyTube.tv” has the potential to get better quickly. Going through the videos on the indytube.tv Web site, I found two genuinely cool ones — Extreme Beer Pong and a song called “Last Call (or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bottle)” — as well as a hilariously bad one of a guy lip-synching the Flo Rida hit “Low.” He introduces the video by stating oh-so-truthfully: "I'm gonna do a song here that I know I'm gonna suck at."

Maybe those videos will make it into Saturday's debut. If not, I don't have a camera handy that I can use to upload a video, so you'll just have picture me shuddering.
