Chris Botti didn’t disappoint his legions of local fans last Thursday at the Murat. Botti only had one change in the band, pianist Peter Martin, who is a sensitive complement to Botti’s introspective style. Guitarist Mark Whitfield was a perfect foil musically and for some breakup humor between the two.
Botti opened the concert backed by Martin with a somber and almost reverent version of “Ave Maria.” Vocalist Sy Smith, who is guitarist Whitfield’s cousin, gave a credible showing in her brief appearance. Botti’s trumpet sound was a joy of ripeness that glistened as he performed meticulous tunes from his chart-topping recent two CDs.
