Vonnegut tributes going forward

While Kurt Vonnegut’s passing has altered the character of public events planned in his honor through April 28 and beyond, many of these events will go forward as Indianapolis takes this time to collectively mourn and celebrate its native son.

Among the events to keep in mind during the coming days:

• The McFadden Memorial Lecture on Friday, April 27 will go ahead as scheduled at 7 p.m. Mark Vonnegut, Kurt Vonnegut Jr.’s son, will read the text that his father had prepared for this occasion. Kurt Vonnegut’s wife, the photographer Jill Kremnetz, and his daughter, Lily, will be in attendance at Clowes Hall on the Butler University campus. Mark Vonnegut is the best-selling author of The Eden Express.

• On Saturday, April 28 at 11 a.m., Mark Vonnegut will attend a special ceremony at the Artsgarden, sponsored by the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library. Vonnegut will place a copy of his father’s novel Slaughterhouse-Five in a time capsule.

• Also on Saturday, April 28, the Indianapolis Museum of Art will carry on with a special program honoring Kurt Vonnegut in place of the public conversation with Vonnegut and his printmaker, Joe Petro, which was originally scheduled. This program will take place at 4 p.m. Details were not available at press time. Ticket holders and others interested in this program should consult the IMA’s Web site  at www.ima-art.org.

• In the meantime, Crown Hill Cemetery and Funeral Home is offering the community an opportunity to share their thoughts and condolences in a register book for the Vonnegut family. This book will be sent to the Vonnegut family, along with a portrait of Kurt Vonnegut, on Friday, April 20 for a family gathering on the East Coast on Saturday. The Vonnegut Register Book is available for visitors to sign in the lobby of Crown Hill Cemetery and Funeral Home through Thursday, April 19 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at 700 W. 38th St. on the corner of 38th and Clarendon Road. Crown Hill will conduct “Heritage and the Vonneguts” walking tours on June 16, 23 and Aug. 4. For more information, call 317-920-2726 or go to www.crownhill.org.
