This is a movie made primarily for fans of the book. As a fan, I can admit it isn't perfect. Too much time is spent leading up to Bella's (Kristen Stewart) revelation that Edward (Robert Pattinson) is a vampire and too little time is left for them to convincingly fall in love. Jasper (Jackson Rathbone) spends his few moments on screen looking like he has just been goosed and Carlisle (Peter Facinelli) has plastic-looking Ken-doll hair. But so much is done right. Stewart and Pattinson are perfect for their roles, as is Billy Burke as Charlie and Can Gigandet as James. Taylor Lautner is darling as Jacob (yes, look for more of him in the sequel). Ashley Greene IS Alice. Sure, it's not a shot-by-shot re-creation of the book, but, as is wont to happen with book-to-movie adaptations, the movie isn't a mere shadow of its origins either. And all the important stuff is here, so the sequels won't have to scramble to fill in the blanks (can you say Harry Potter
?). Overall, this is a satisfying translation of a cult-like phenomenon into a new medium. 124 minutes. DVD INFO: Includes a commentary track by director Catherine Hardwicke and actors Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, five extended scenes, five deleted scenes, music videos, a documentary and a featurette.
