Transgender translation

A person’s gender doesn’t always match the body they were born with. This situation can make growing up difficult for transgender kids and their parents. Fortunately, there are people who are standing up for the right of these kids to be who they are. Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) is presenting an informative program, “Transgender Translation: A Parent’s Perspective,” on June 10 from 2-4:30 p.m. at St. Luke’s Methodist Church, 100 W. 86th St.

Shannon Garcia, the mother of a 7-year-old trans girl and a member of TransYouth Family Advocates, will make a presentation with Bruce Parker of the Indiana Transgender Rights Advocacy Alliance. They will discuss their experiences and the social and cultural challenges these kids face as well as provide strategies on how to advocate for transgender young ones.
