500 people took part last year in Tour de Coops, a self-guided tour of Northside chicken coops taking off from Center for Inquiry School #84. Numbers are expected to double this year, making for a critical mass of chicken enthusiasts, most of them on bikes (the preferred mode of transportation for the tour, though cars may also be used). A portion of the proceeds will finance the installation of a coop and chickens at an area school through Naptown Chicken's Project Poultry program. A coop will also be raffled off during the program, with chickens furnished and installation arranged by Naptown Chickens, an organization that advocates for urban chicken farming. And unlike riders in that other famous tour, these chickens are steroid-free (unless they have viable medical need).
