Monday, July 19, Theatre on the Square purchased the building located at 621-627 Massachusetts Ave., which the organization has called home for the past 11 seasons. Ron Spencer, founder and executive artistic director of the theater, signed the agreement which allowed TOTS to buy the property outright from former owners Bob and Mary West of Fishers.
The mortgage-less purchase was made possible by generous contributions from The Sunrise Foundation, The Christel DeHaan Family Foundation and the Central Indiana Community Foundation and is the culmination of a two-year intensive effort by Spencer and the theater’s former director of development, Jonathon Markanday. Markanday cited “Jerry and Robina Zink, Christel DeHaan, Karen Witt, Brian Payne and Harry McFarland and the boards of their respective organizations as the real architects of our good fortune. These are people who care deeply about all of Indy’s struggling arts organizations.”
Spencer added, “The savings of $30,000-plus per year will allow the theater to raise the standard of our production quality, make needed improvements to the building and increase the size of our staff. But most importantly, it provides us with a security and sense of permanency arts organizations rarely enjoy. It is truly a blessing and a luxury.”
