Thumbs up: Good neighbors

Building on three years of archival research and oral history interviews with community elders, a group of IUPUI anthropology students, under the direction of Susan B. Hyatt, associate professor of anthropology in the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI, have authored a book chronicling the history a Southside neighborhood remarkable for its deep bonds of friendship and cooperation between it Jewish and African-American residents. A celebration of the book, The Neighborhood of Saturdays: Memories of a Multi-Ethnic Neighborhood on Indianapolis' Southside, is set for 7-10 p.m. on Dec. 20 at the Jewish Community Center, 6701 Hoover Rd. The City Council is also set to recognize the neighborhood's legacy with a special resolution.
