Thumbs up: Celebrating Hoosier Burmese

Among Indy's varied international connections exists an exceptionally strong link to the people of Myanmar, formerly known as Burma. The city is home to about 7,000 Burmese refugees who fled their homeland to escape oppression and persecution by the ruling military dictatorship. Estimating that Indy's Burmese community will grow to between 20,000 and 30,000 people in the next few years, local leaders last year founded the Burmese American Community Institute with the motto of "advocating, connecting, educating and serving." The institute, which can always use teaching volunteers and donations for supplies and equipment, will celebrate its one-year anniversary at 6 p.m., June 2, at Winchester Village Elementary School, 1900 E. Stop 12 Rd. For more info check out baci-indy.org
