On the same day that Indianapolis tallied four homicides in 24 hours, Public Safety Director Scott Newman said the city’s search for a new police chief was on hold and that “we’re pleased with the way things are going.” It’s more likely Newman and Mayor Ballard are pleased with our police chief’s low salary. At $103,500, Chief Michael Spears makes about one-third less than his colleagues in cities like Louisville and Columbus, Ohio.
