Theater

2006 will kick off with another slew of theater openings.

• From the creator of Sordid Lives, which played for an extended run at Theatre on the Square last season, TOTS will produce Del Shores’ Southern Baptist Sissies. The play is about four young men and how each tries to reconcile his homosexuality with his faith. The show promises to be both touching and hilarious, as much of Shores’ work is. Southern Baptist Sissies runs Jan. 6-Feb. 25, Fridays-Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 5 p.m. Tickets are $20; $17 for students and senior citizens. Opening weekend tickets are $10. Please note that the show contains adult themes and partial nudity. For reservations, call 317-685-8687.

• The Phoenix Theatre will produce the Indiana premiere of Caryl Churchill’s short (one hour) cloning drama A Number Jan. 5-29. In this two-actor play, one actor portrays Salter, a father; the other actor plays three of his sons, two of whom are clones. Salter’s meetings with the original son and two clones bring to light questions about the dangers of genetic engineering to society as well as to the individuals involved. Post-play discussions will follow select performances. Performances are Thursdays at 7 p.m., Fridays-Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $25; $15 for those 24 and under. Opening weekend all seats are $15. Call 317-635-PLAY for more information.

• Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre will present the delightful musical comedy I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. It is a smart, sassy musical satire that focuses on dating and marriage. Shows are Tuesdays-Sundays, Jan. 5-Feb. 5. Call 317- 872-9664 for dates and times.

• Epilogue Theatre will showcase Three One-Act Plays: When Strangers Meet. The shorts are “Emissary” by Marcia Savin (life is never as bad as it seems), “Just a Song at Twilight” by Doris M. Vineberg (the shock of recognition) and “The Cat Connection” by Elyse Ness (Who’s feeding the cat? You! No, me!). Shows are Jan. 6-22, Fridays-Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are only $8; $7 seniors; and free to season ticket holders. Call 317-842-2811.
