The outdoor summer jazz scene 

Now that lawnmowers and weedwackers are in full swing, there is a more pleasant sound we can listen to. Take time to visit one of the numerous outdoor jazz events going on in and around Indy this summer. To date, here are the listings that were made available to us. Concerts on the Canal Indiana Historical Society June 5: Deb Mullins Band June 12: IUPUI Jazz Ensemble & The Jack Gilfoy Trio June 19: Urbanos Latin Jazz July 24: Brenda Williams, Shannon Forsell and Bob Motz Aug. 14: Cathy Morris, Mary Moss and Monika Herzig Aug. 21: The Pocket Big Band Swing Night Music goes from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Concerts are free to the public. Jammin’ at the ‘Jorg Eiteljorg Museum June 12: Everett Greene July 10: Urbanos Aug. 14: Conga Jazz Sept. 11: Brenda Williams & Friends Music goes from 5 to 8 p.m. Admission is $8, $5 for museum members — with free hors d’oeuvres and cash bar. Concert on the Lawn President Benjamin Harrison Home June 27: Tommy Mullinix and the Naptown Strutters Jazz at Watkins Park (Presented by American Legion Post 249) June 29: “Pookie” Johnson & the Indy Jazz Company July 27: TBA Aug. 31: TBA Sept. 28: TBA Music goes from 5 to 8 p.m. This is a free public event; bring your lawnchairs and food. Concerts on the Terrace Indianapolis Museum of Art July 1: Seven Pleasures and the Mudkids July 8: Randy Sabien and the Fiddlehead Band July 15: Norman Connors July 22: Ray Vegas Latin Jazz Quintet July 29: Nelson Rangell Animals and All That Jazz Indianapolis Zoo (Presented by IU Medical Groups) July 17: Jason Curry Quartet and Brenda Williams July 24: Cathy Morris & Friends July 31: Seven Pleasures Aug. 7: Greg Bacon Aug. 14: Urbanos Aug. 21: Buselli Wallarab Jazz Orchestra & Everett Greene Music goes from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., rain or shine. Admission: regular zoo fee; members get in free. A variety of food choices and drinks are available. Jazz happenings It’s full swing into the summer season, where jazz blows both hot and cool depending on the venue you choose this week. Downtown The Chatterbox brings back the hip jazz/pop vocal sound of Tim Brickley’s Quintet on Friday, May 30. A rare appearance of the Sara Caswell Group will be Saturday. This violinist, who performs in the classical arena, is an exceptionally gifted jazz player with an immense, straight-ahead, swinging vibe. Sets both nights run from 10:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. with a cover charge. Circle City Bar and Grille at the Marriott’s Wine Wednesday May 28 will feature Dr. Virginia Jefferson on solo piano. Friday, May 30 has Lisa Baldwin’s smooth jazz and adult contemporary vocal and keyboard stylings from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 31 brings back the Latin style of Conga Jazz playing 7 to 11 p.m. At Adam’s Mark Hotel in the Tiffany Rose Lounge, Bill Kennaugh’s Duo plays Fridays and Saturdays from 7 to 10 p.m. Nicky Blaine’s presents Cozy with Her Fellas on Mondays. The Four Sexes can be heard on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and on Thursdays The Tom Mullinix Quartet swings hard. Music all nights is from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Northside The Jazz Kitchen has a prominent Indy jazz legend with the hard swinging Melvin Rhyne Quartet on Friday, May 30 for two shows at 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. It’s a special night Saturday, May 31 when Indy’s popular group Dog Talk takes the bandstand to celebrate their 10th year as a group. There will probably be some musical surprises in their bag of jazz, R&B, Latin and reggae for two shows at 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. Don’t forget each Wednesday it’s “Nightbreeze Night Out” with WTPI’s live broadcast, hosted by Oleta Martin and J.C. Culver, plus the great sounds of Cathy Morris’ Brazilian Lounge Band 6 to 9 p.m. and the heated groove of Seven Pleasures from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. Wednesdays are a great hang for fun and food and jazz. Gregory’s features Everett Greene with Carl Hines on keyboards Friday, May 30. The “Lady With A Song” Mary Moss with Alan “Turke” Burk on keyboards perform Saturday, May 31. Music both nights is from 8 to 11 p.m. Sullivan’s Steakhouse has the trio of Claude Sifferlen on piano, Joe Deal on bass and Kevin Johnson on drums playing hot jazz Friday, May 30 and Saturday, May 31 from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. both nights. Northwest Rick’s Cafe Boatyard features Steve Weakly’s guitar on Sundays from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tim Brickley sings Sundays and Wednesdays from 7 to 10 p.m. Monika Herzig Acoustic Trio plays Tuesdays and Saturdays 7 to 10 p.m. Richard Torres Quartet plays Thursdays and Fridays 7 to 10 p.m. Eastside Lulu’s at the Fashion Mall has Mary Moss’ vocals Carl Hines’ keyboards and Mingo Jones’ bass Thursday, May 29 performing 8 to 11 p.m. Northminster Presbyterian Church features The Jack Gilfoy Trio at its weekly Sunday 5 p.m. evening worship service titled “Jazz, Jeans and Jesus.”
