'The Mercy Seat' at Theater Within

You read about this last week, right? If you didn't, why weren't you reading your NUVO? Okay, we'll let you off the hook... this time. Josefa Beyer's profile of The Theater Within and their artistic director Rod Isaac told the story of the little theater that could. A small performance group, inside a church, that stages challenging plays like Oleanna, Bent and The Laramie Project. And now, Neil LaBute's The Mercy Seat will occupy the tiny stage at The Church Within, 1125 Spruce St., playing Sept. 11, 12, 18, 19, 25 and 26 - all shows at 8 p.m. Leave it to LaBute to be one of the first artists to tackle the emotional complexity of Sept. 11 - and note the opening night for this play! The plot concerns a World Trade Center employee who would have died in the attack, had he not been out of the building with his mistress. Expect simple production values, great writing (LaBute is author of In the Company of Men, The Shape of Things, Nurse Betty, Reasons To Be Pretty) and terrific acting (Cheryl Fesmire and Horace Webster star). Tickets are $12; $10 for students/seniors. For more: 317-850-4665; www.thechurchwithin.
