Four stars (R)
Character study turned heist film, about Chris Pratt (Gordon-Levitt), a brain-damaged young man — once a high school hero — who gets drawn into a bank robbery scheme. The beautifully-acted portrait of Chris and his snarky, but caring roommate/mentor Lewis (Jeff Daniels) is mesmerizing. The bank caper finale is a bit cumbersome, lacking the finesse of what came before, but the good far outweighs the bad in this fine film — one of the year’s best. 99 minutes.
