Telematic Ensemble concert review

The concert Thursday evening in IUPUI's Informatics and Information Technology Complex was one with many faces. This concert had something you loved and something you hated. First were two improvisations between the Telematic Ensemble and other musicians across the country connected by the ultra-fast Web2.0. Despite minor technical glitches, both pieces yielded exciting musical moments. The next ensemble, Indianapolis-based BASILICA, was rooted in classical and heavy metal traditions. They provided the music for the highlight of the concert: Charlie Olvera's Modifiers No. 1 (2008-2009). This piece included BASILICA playing in front of a video of dancers featuring Jamie Ripsky and Tommy Lewey. Olvera's video manipulation techniques were simple yet interesting. He managed to make it video not just about the interaction of the two dancers, but about the interaction of color. The last two pieces, both student video works, had good intentions but came up short technically and stylistically.
