Taxi to the Dark Side

4 stars

Writer/director Alex Gibney (“Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room”) crafts a powerful documentary about prisoner torture at the hands of American forces, starting with the story of a wrongly accused Afghan taxi driver named Dilawar who dies five days after being taken into custody. His legs were beaten so badly by his American captors that, had he survived, they would have had to be amputated. From Bagram to Guantanamo Bay, Gibney lays it out — the torture, the cover-ups, the excuses. 106 minutes. DVD INFO: Includes a commentary track from Gibney, deleted scenes, interviews with Gibney's father (a WWII Navy investigator who successfully got information from prisoners without touching them), President Jimmy Carter and more.
