Speed date

So, just how do you meet Mr. or Mrs. Right any more? You speed date. Forget the dim, smoky, crowded bars with the scent of stale beer wafting through the dense air. Forget the woeful one-liners and the neediness of aggressive one-night-stand wannabes. Spare the beer goggles. Two words: speed date.

“Half will match instantly,” Jennifer Kampmeier, the Indy promotional director of Pre-Dating.com, said of speed dating attendees. She hosted the speed dating event at the Blu Martini for singles ages 26-33 Monday night, June 7. It looked like musical chairs with 10 boy-girl couples switching partners every six minutes when Jennifer rang a little silver bell. After each “pre-date,” couples discreetly circle “yes” or “no” next to the other’s ID number on their Match Sheet. If both circle “yes,” they receive each other’s e-mail address and/or phone number the following day. Space was limited to only 20 people so that everyone could mingle comfortably and relax during the hour and a half session that took place 6:30-8 p.m. It was additionally very cool that these folks had the Blu Martini exclusively to themselves.

“I love getting people acclimated with each other,” Jennifer said. “There’s no pressure. You meet them. You like them. If you don’t like them — no big deal.” She recalled seeing two couples in Broad Ripple last week that met at a February Valentine’s event hosted by Pre-Dating.com. “They’re happy!” she said excitedly about their romantic success stories.

“It’s all about networking,” she added, saying that she met one of her best gal pal friends at a Pre-Dating.com speed-dating event.

After finishing a round with one woman, attendee Jason Rowley wrote on his assessment form that he wasn’t particularly interested in a romantic relationship with this person, but thought she’d make a great friend. “I’m new to the area and wanted to meet people,” he told me, all smiles. All the participants had smiles on their faces and were actually having a really great time. Jason, like so many of the guys there, was not just a gentleman, but handsome and had a great sense of humor to boot. If you are single in the city, speed dating should be a no-brainer. Catches were abundant.

How do you dress to meet your potential romantic interest? Well, comfortably and casually, but not too casually and definitely not sloppy. Comfortable is key. Guys in polo short sleeved shirts, oxford clothes, jeans and khaki shorts were the good-looking, polished norm for the sultry, humid weather on Monday. For the girls, knee-length print skirts with solid tops and fabulous shoes were appropriate.

Dali Yambo, Indianapolis resident hailing from Puerto Rico, looked fabulously feminine for her speed dating adventure. Quite frankly, her shoes alone should have made her marriage material for every suitor there. The 3-inch (maybe 4) spiky high heel, pointy toe, thin ankle strap leather pumps in a warm cocoa brown are the ultra shoe of the moment. Her rethought classic shoe gives the ladylike footwear a va-va-voom intrigue. They elongate legs no matter how shapely and are an accessory statement that doesn’t require much else. Since clothes reflect personality, then Dali’s shoes said she’s got great character and great style.

Nearly 3 years old, speed dating is still a pretty young trend, but is oh-so popular and flourishing as a successful way to meet people. Pre-Dating.com hosts eight to 10 speed dating events (limited to 20 people per event) every week serving different age groups.

Pre-Dating.com future events include “Singles and the Arts,” Thursday, June 10, for single professionals, ages 39-49. For the arts-minded, it’s a wine and cheese mix and mingle at the Arts in Harmony Gallery at 86th and Westfield. Cost is $30 per person. Visit www.pre-dating.com/IndyArtMixer.php3.

PS O’Rourke’s will be the location for an all-single professionals (ages 27-37) event on Tuesday, June 22. Smokies BBQ will host another all-single professionals (ages 24-34) event Thursday, July 15. Visit www.Pre-Dating.com for more info on these and more events.
