Southern Baptist Sissies

Five stars

Theatre on the Square; directed by Ron Spencer

If you haven’t seen Southern Baptist Sissies yet, go see it. Now. Still one of the most powerful pieces of theater I have seen, Theatre on the Square’s revival of their record-breaking show from last year is every bit as good — maybe even better — than the first production. I cried … again. The original cast returned for this show. Robert Webster, William Skaggs, Dannon Crews and Thomas Turner are four boys growing up in Dallas, dealing with their Baptist upbringing and their homosexuality. The anguish they experience is nothing short of heartbreaking. Equally compelling are Ron Spencer and Juli Inskeep as two barflies, looking back on their own missteps in life. Rounding out the cast is Dan Flahive on the piano and Janet Ransdell as the moms. The show is unapologetic and even in your face about homosexuality and the repercussions of a faith that discriminates. Excellent. Through June 30; 317-685-TOTS
