The Atlanta Dream defeated the Indiana Fever 67-53 to win the WNBA Eastern Conference Finals on Sunday, September 29th at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The Dream will take on the Western Conference representative Minnesota Lynx in the best of 5 series, beginning October 6.
A long road towards repeating as WNBA Champions came to an end, but not without a fight. A lean third quarter, in which the Dream outscored the Fever 16-9, proved impossible from which to recover. "We played hard, and gave them everything we had," stated Fever forward Tamika Catchings afterward. "We showed a lot of adversity all season long... and to go out and fight the way we did." The season of injuries and revolving faces on the court finally caught up with the spirited squad.
The Dream used quickness, ball rotation, and rebounding to open up a 48 to 20 point advantage in the paint. Atlanta was led by Angel McCoughtry (#35) with 27 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. Center Erika DeSouza added 12 points on 5 for 7 shooting, and 8 rebounds.
Indiana was just 18 for 64 from the field as the Fever struggled offensively. Tamika Catchings (#24) was the only scorer in double figures with 24, as Layshia Clarendon (#5) added 7.
Catchings looks forward with optimism to the changes looming ahead next season. "Next year's team will be different. One or two players will be gone, and you know everything changes. So you kinda live in the moment... we had a great year."
