If you like busy, whimsical, perky, weird and memorable pop music, Shugo Tokumaru’s first widely available record, Exit
(just released in the U.S.), may be your favorite collection of songs all year long. Ten gonzo compositions deep, Exit
’s arrangements are as complex and surprising as pop music gets, mixing in every instrument under the sun as Tokumaru sings (sometimes in Japanese, sometimes in English) the catchiest songs of the year, even if we don’t know what he’s saying half the time. If nothing else, be sure to hear kitchen sink classic “Button” before the clock strikes ’09. Not a bad stick in this poppy pack.
