Show review - Lloyd Cole

Lloyd Cole Bir

Lloyd Cole Birdy’s Sunday, May 2 Lloyd Cole, without all the commotion, played to a measly crowd of around 40 people at Birdy’s: another typical TV-watching Sunday evening in Indy. It had been 14 years since he last played here and he declared that it was “fantastic” being back, receiving a few self-deprecating snickers from the crowd. The well-dressed, salt ’n’ pepper-haired Cole shared several songs from his new release, Music in a Foreign Language, on One Little Indian Records, including the beautiful title track. Cole’s uniquely enriched voice cast captivating eddies over the silent, entranced audience; his sound still tranquil and appealing despite his confessed mild state of walking pneumonia. Fans shouted out a few requests, which he tried to accommodate. A few missed chords here and there: It was obvious he hadn’t toured in a while but, disregarding his English stoicism, he was surprisingly open, charming and engaging with the crowd. He made time for his late ’80s/early ’90s classics, such as “Lost Weekend,” “Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken” and “Undressed.” I was terribly disappointed not to hear “Rattlesnakes” or “Perfect Skin.” In a humorous prelude to “Unhappy Song,” he confessed that he regrets few things in his life. He is happy; he has a beautiful wife and two healthy children. “But,” he said, “I do regret one thing … having school children sing on this song on the record; that I regret fully …” Finishing the song “Trigger Happy,” Cole said, “That’s my wife’s favorite song … of mine; I must qualify that.” Underrated for his guitar playing, he impressively toggled between two acoustic guitars. As always, his songs sounded much the same, but that’s the essence of his mastery: continuum and consistency of sound. He plays the beginning of the story with chapter one, and each song prolongs the plot.
