Show Review
Scissor Sisters, VHS or Beta Music Mill Wednesday, Dec. 15
The much-hyped Scissor Sisters performed at the Music Mill last week.
The first song we heard as we walked toward the Music Mill didn't come from the Scissor Sisters. Instead, we heard customers moaning the "No Coats Allowed" blues as they walked back to their cars. Despite frigid temperatures and a packed parking lot that had many hiking over from in front of Babies R Us, security guards at the new music venue at Clearwater Crossing wouldn't bend on the ban. If The Fonz had showed in his leather jacket, these dudes would have sent him back to his room above the Cunninghams' garage. Apparently, nobody included a coat check in the plans for this place. It seems a few issues were overlooked as the Music Mill kicked off with a sold-out show from the Scissor Sisters. The managers of the place staffed the venue's three bars with six bartenders. The result was lines the length of the place. Suggestion: Get several big buckets for bottles of beer and hire people to stand there and sell them. OK, I'm done bitching. The Scissor Sisters were very entertaining - especially the svelte and shirtless Jake Spears. He danced like a madman in his mirrored suit and suspenders. His stage presence, along with his Elton-John-like pipes, made the icy walk through the strip-mall parking lot well worth it. Anna Matronic, his female counterpart, was less enjoyable with her over-the-top sassiness. She's came off as James Brown minus the soul and plus a paisley muumuu. The band played pretty much everything on the current hit album - the highlights coming when they turned the place into a disco inferno with "Filthy/Gorgeous" and their Grammy-nominated cover of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb." The crowd got most revved up with the upbeat "Laura" as the Scissor Sisters proved that girls and boys still just want to have fun.
