Secretly Canadian showcase

Catfish Haven, Early Day Miners, Impossible Shapes, Phyllis, Hey Hey Melodica!
Birdy’s Bar & Grill
Thursday, Jan. 11, 8 p.m., cover charge

Billed as “Secretly Canadian Nite” by local promotion company Full Blown Possession, one could view this mini festival at Birdy’s as the beginning of Indianapolis’ recognition of the infamous indie-rock label from Bloomington, Ind. Though the label has recently swung into the mainstream with releases from big time acts like Antony and the Johnsons and I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness, it began as a startup company releasing homegrown acts like Marmoset, Racebannon, Songs: Ohia and Dave Fischoff.

Three of Secretly Canadian’s regional acts will take part in the event. The Impossible Shapes are a psychedelic power-pop trio out of Bloomington. Aaron Deer and Chris Barth began the band as teen-agers while living in Zionsville. The Shapes have had a wild variety in their catalog and have been fairly prolific over the years. Their first three records were released in the earlier parts of the decade on Luna Music’s label, Recordhead. Three more Shapes’ records and various solo works by Barth and Deer have also been released by Secretly Canadian since the band switched labels in 2003.

The Early Day Miners, another Bloomington group, play a drastically different type of rock and roll. Led by Louisville-bred Daniel Burton, the ever-shifting and longtime unit plays a darkly tinged and nuanced style of post-rock. In one last dramatic shift in sound, Catfish Haven from Chicago is an energetic, bar-rock trio influenced by Southern rock and ’60s soul music. The three bands highlight Secretly Canadian’s penchant for musical variety and quality within its roster.

The night will begin with two local acts, Phyllis and Hey Hey Melodica!. Phyllis has been a mainstay of the Indianapolis music community since the mid-’90s, and its members have ties to the Lovemeknots. Hey Hey Melodica!, a new band also from Indianapolis, has recently been noticed by local music fans of good, tuneful indie-rock songs.
