Friday, July 9, offers up things to do throughout the day all over the city. Check them out:
From 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the 21st Annual Ice Cream Social on the Circle will take place downtown. Celebrity scoopers will include Hink, the Butler Bulldogs mascot; Ray Cortopassi from Fox 59 and Angela Cain from WTHR; and Melvin Bullitt of the Indianapolis Colts. The $3 cost for a chocolate, strawberry, caramel, or butterscotch sundae will benefit Marlin Jackson’s Fight for Life Foundation. The event will also include face painters, interactive games and displays, and the fa-moo-us Molly the Cow from Purdue University Dairy Sciences.
Abstract painter James Horn and jewelry maker Yelena Adelfinskaya will exhibit their works from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the T.K. Nelson Fine Art Gallery (6331 N. Keystone Avenue). The gallery is a small but nice space that showcases artists’ work well. Nelson, himself a painter, also has some of his prints for sale. The show is free.
If spoken word is your thing, check out Poetry in Motion at Gallery One 36 (136 E. Main Street) in Carmel. Bring a lawn chair, something to drink, and $3 to share your work or $5 if you just want to listen. Things kick off at 6:00 p.m. on the Arts Patio and last a couple hours. If it rains, the reading will be held indoors.
Those who prefer to stay downtown might like the Avant Grande Art Show starting at 7:00 p.m. at ARTBOX (217 West Tenth Street). The show, showcasing artwork made by Starbucks baristas, benefits Young Audiences of Indiana, the state's foremost supplier of arts education experiences for kids in Indiana schools. Event lasts until 11:00 p.m. and asks for a $10 donation.
