Scary times

Just read your article in NUVO and I couldn’t agree more (Hammer, “The Legacy of 1968,” Dec. 12-19). Personally, 1968 felt like the end of the world. It’s very difficult to try and explain 1968 to those who weren’t around then but it looked and felt a lot like Armageddon. Scary times.

However, if we were having a smoke and a beer, I’d quibble with you about just exactly when the military-industrial state (complex) was formed. At the end of WWII, the military-industrial complex was already up and running full tilt. It’s been doing so ever since. No administration has ever dared tell it to stand down. I’m reminded of the scene in the movie Nixon where a young college girl confronts the president at the Lincoln Memorial. Looking at the president she says, “You can’t stop it, can you?” There’s the crux of it to this day.

Anyway, great column — always enjoy your writing.
