Two stars

Phoenix Theatre; directed by Chris White; April 12-15.

Rhythms is a new play written by Chris White, assistant professor of English at DePauw University. It is supposed to “reveal … the shared nature of the cyclical feminine through stories of birth, loss, food, sex, music, work, the natural world and death.” But while it can be amusing at times, the lack of depth and continuity of the piece left me with no spiritual revelation about the glory of being a woman. In fact, the play is so disjointed that you can let your mind wander for a few minutes without missing anything that will hamper your intake of the rest of the show. And while it is being tooted that Hollywood actress Rae Dawn Chong stars in it, she is but one of an ensemble of seven, with no outstanding part to play outside of her particular character. After all the show’s hype, I left feeling a little let down. If you want to check it out for yourself, it will play at DePauw April 17-18.
