I got myself a little treat last Friday when I went to check out Freddy T and the People, and Street Spirits at the Mel. I also saw Ha Ha You, but I won't say much about that. But, as it turns out, Ha Ha You's bassist is the Leader of Freddy T and the People, who are clearly set to go places in this city and have a new album of great songs that they just put up on their Bandcamp page. The best song of the night was "Everything is Broken" which started off as a Dirtbombs meets Sly raver, and descended into a grooving funk jazz jam out wherein the horn section ruled. The kids at the Mousetrap will lose their shit over this band.
Street Spirits has a Margot member, a Peoni and two Heaton Brothers. Todd Heaton sings through a heavy delay and writes songs that blend the FSDC psychedelic sound with a heavy shoegaze tint. Chris Fry shined brightly behind the drum kit, teaming up with Wes Heaton to keep things hypnotic-like while Nick Peoni and Todd let loose a barrage of soaring guitar heroics. Especially on songs like "Lonely and In Love" and "Killed It," the band came together and made a solid impression.
It was nice to go out on a cold January night and see a couple new(er) bands from completely different genres tearing it up and giving us all hope for the coming year.
