Spotlight 2012: Seeing Red proved a green for "go" with earnings of $401,000 toward continued support of the Indiana AIDS Fund in their work to prevent the spread of HIV disease through education and treatment.

Over the past 17 years Spotlight audiences have contributed $5 million; that doesn't count the aggregate donation of time and talent by performers, stagehands, volunteers, media, business and industry, other non-profit groups, which can't be measured.

Spotlight showcased 20 performing groups, ten of which featured dance. There were two newcomers: The Fourth Wall, a spunky trio of musicians meticulously playing instruments while executing sophisticated choreography as humorous pas de trios; and Transient Music Festival, with two of their resident artists beautifully melding tenor and baritone voices.

New to Tasha Jones' annual rendition of poignant poetry and sense of style was Flamenco dancer Julie Baggenstoss, extending and punctuating "the story of all women." It was a "welcoming back" for Christine Colquitt Thacker to reprise her role in Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre's sterling "The Hunchback of Notre Dame."

And while Butler Ballet is a regular, it was a premiere for Olivia Yoch and Garrett Glassman in the joyful pas de deux from Coppelia. Nicholas Owens Dance Company appearing for a second time is poised to open this Fall in residency on the Shortridge stage. Spotlight is life affirming. May 7 at Clowes Memorial Hall

Kudos to Butler Ballet for tackling two 20th-cent pieces: 'Pierrot Lunaire,' with choreography by Larry Attaway, and Paul Taylor's 'Le Sacre du Printemps' (The Rehearsal).
