Review: Resident Evil 7 teaser

Unlike any other game in the franchise, the teaser is set in the first person perspective with a silent protagonist.

The best thing about the teaser for Resident Evil 7 is that it doesn’t really feel all that much like. Rather, it feels like a VR horror passion project that Capcom slapped the brand name on in order to boost interest. That’s not the ideal way to get new stuff out there, but hey, I’ll take it.

Unlike any other game in the franchise, the teaser is set in the first person perspective with a silent protagonist.

The teaser begins with the player character, a cameraman named Clancy, tied up in a dirty basement with another man who deliriously climbs to his feet and attempts to set Clancy free ... and then horror stuff happens.

Seeing as this is a teaser, not a whole lot happens here apart from some atmosphere building and some bits and pieces about the plot. It’s set in a creepy old abandoned farm house where a lovely Ma and Pa Kent style couple lived with their problem child of a son. Anyone who’s seen any horror movie can fill in the basics from there.

Though there’s not a lot of meat to the teaser, it does show some promise, mostly in terms of atmosphere building and dramatic tension. The old farmhouse is decrepit, and rotting, with boards creaking underfoot, dust falls from the rafters and abandoned food has grown moldy and stagnant in the kitchen. It looks fantastic setting for a first person survival horror game.

My biggest question at this point is if the devs will try to tie it into the insane continuity of the series, or if this is just a number reboot. The latter would probably be best at this point, and allow for fresher ideas and stories in the future.

Until then though, I’d keep an eye on this one.
