Friday night the sisters Jurkiewicz celebrated the release of their new record, Fumes, with a packed house at Deluxe. By now you’ve probably seen the recent coverage of Indy’s new favorite duo and might be wondering what the big deal is about.

After a support slot by California indie-folk band Run River North, Lily and Madeleine took to the stage and, for a little more than an hour, performed flawlessly for an attentive hometown crowd.

Joined by Shannon Hayden on cello, Lily (17) and Madeleine (20) began a set of melancholic melodies with their gentle ode to Indianapolis, “In the Middle." A full backing band joined them soon after, including collaborator Kenny Childers and members of Philadelphia group Square Peg Round Hole, giving a welcome new dimension to their sound. New material like “The Wolf is Free” and the catchy new single “Rabbitt” showcased their growth as songwriters, while still soaked with the perfect harmonies of earlier songs. A take on Phil Phillip’s “Sea of Love” during the encore seemed as heartfelt as if they wrote it themselves.

If one thing could be taken away from the show it’s that Lily and Madeleine, with their amazing voices and beautiful songs, are genuine. Sometimes that’s a big deal.
