Review: Les Miserables at Beef & Boards

Les Miserables is a magnificent work infused with the sweep of humanity. Within Beef & Boards' intimate setting every aspect of the story becomes more poignant, every character feels more fully connected to the intricate relationships than in any of the other huge productions I've seen.

This production, like a finely cut diamond, gained its radiance from within its layered depths emanating out of a central point. Victor Hugo interwove opposites: justice/injustice, wealth/poverty, love/hatred, forgiveness/ vindictiveness, depth/shallowness, pathos/ humor. Everyone brings superb talent and understanding to the development of personal and communal concerns. There are no small parts, no extraneous moments.

Clarity of diction, fine singing, and fine production elements including the orchestra earned the standing ovation. From the lean setting bountiful images could be conjured up within your mind, making you a participant, not merely a witness. Space does not allow all involved to be mentioned so attend a performance to experience theatre at its finest.
