Crooner Jeremy Jordan is on the verge of becoming a household name. A star of Broadway’s Newsies and NBC’s Smash, he'll soon appear in the film version of the 2001 musical The Last Five Years opposite Anna Kendrick.
Moneyed musical theater fans packed The Cabaret at the Columbia Club last weekend to be serenaded by the honeyed tones of Jordan’s dynamic voice. His down-to-earth personality shone through his dressed-down jeans and flannel, making him the most approachable person in the room.
Perhaps most exciting were the numbers on which Jordan built his reputation, such as his spot-on rendition of Jack Kelly’s heart-wrenching ballad “Santa Fe" (from Newsies). Performing the song eight times a week, Jordan has honed it into a finely polished gem.
Unfortunately, inconsistency infiltrated the show as he bravely took up the guitar to play his original tunes and invited wife Ashley Spencer on stage for a few love ballads. But Jordan will surely have time to iron out these kinks during a long career.
