Review: A Thousand Falling Crows

A look into Larry Sweazy's mystery novel

4.5 stars

Larry Sweazy's mystery novel tries to make sense of seemingly random slayings, family discord and national attention in a peaceful small town. Sweazy’s masterful storytelling weaves multiple events together making them as familiar as an ordinary day turning into mayhem.

It’s 1933 and the infamous Bonnie and Clyde roll into a town already besieged by the effects of drought and depression. Ranger Sonny Burton is on their tail but the unpredictable happens and we’re plunged into a tangle of family and community dynamics.

If you’ve been reading Sweazy’s novels for the past decades you’ll find A Thousand Falling Crows adding to his sterling ability to make places and people come alive. Every situation is plausible, every observation a true option for solving the mystery, every choice is valid within the range of true human nature.

We’d be spoiling the adventure by revealing more.

Sweazy is a lifelong resident of Indiana, born in Anderson, and a graduate of Highland High School. He currently lives in Noblesville, with his wife, Rose.

Sweazy’s awards include the Western Writers of America (WWA) Spur Award for Best Short Story of 2005 and Best Paperback Western Novel of 2013, the Will Rogers Medallion Award in 2011 and 2012, and the Best Book of Indiana honor in 2011 for his Josiah Wolfe, Texas Ranger Western series.
