Three stars (PG-13)
Christian Bale, Steve Zahn, Jeremy Davies
Werner Herzog’s dramatizes his 1997 documentary, Little Dieter Needs to Fly, telling the story of Dieter Dengler, who moved from Germany to America, joined the Navy, learned to fly, and got shipped off to Vietnam, where he was shot down over Laos. British native Bale plays Dengler with a generic American accent instead of his real German one, which is odd. The film effectively conveys a sense of the hell the prisoners went through, including the tedium of captivity. 125 minutes.
