No plans on Friday? Ha, not anymore! Check out these free events all coming up on May 7:
B. Java Coffee and Tea (5510 Lafayette Road) has made a home for visual artists since 2006 when it was still known as Stanton Coffee. Current owner Bj Davis took over in 2007, renamed the shop, and has continued the tradition. She works with an art coordinator, Kris May, an artist and former gallery owner, who has booked shows through the end of the year. Felt art and drawings by Clementine Quixote currently on display will soon come down. B. Java will host a reception for photographer Dionne Ward and her show, “Walkabout: Images of an American’s Exploration of Australia.” The event will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and the show will be up through June. Call (317) 280-1236 for more information.
Broad Ripple Gallery Tour: Firmly in the “OOOOH SHINY!” category is this chance to visit 17 Broad Ripple hot spots, including Big Hat Books & Arts, The Indianapolis Art Center, and Chelsea’s. Chelsea’s is one of several locations that will feature limited-edition ceramics that will support ongoing programs of VSAI, an organization who makes arts experiences accessible for persons with disabilities. The tour takes place from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. View the event brochure and get ready for great art, which will include paintings, sculpture, jewelry, and, my personal favorite, work by ceramicist Jim Kemp.
A Working History of Things to Come: Eric Hudgins’ solo show at Wug Laku’s Studio & Garage (Circle Center Industrial Complex, 1125 Brookside Avenue, c7) sounds intriguing with the artist’s nods towards tattoo art, spirituality, and Salvador Dali — three things I’m definitely into as an inked Wiccan who digs surrealism. (I know. I should have my own talk show.) The evening will last from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Calling 317-270-8258 will get you more information or, at the very least, a pleasant voice mail message.
