Q&A with Mindy Taylor Ross

Mindy Taylor Ross leads a small company called Art Strategies, LLC, which has contracted with the Arts Council of Indianapolis with funding provided by the Cultural Development Commission to implement portions of their Public Art Master Plan. Her recommended Public Art Work Plan was just approved by the commission and in the next 18 months she will be rolling out the first biennial Great Ideas Competition and a fund to support art projects in public spaces. Q: What are you reading now?

A: The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson. Since moving to Indianapolis I’ve become fascinated with Chicago and its development.

Q: What do you like about the Indianapolis arts scene?

A: It is an extremely fertile time in Indianapolis and there are visual artists living and working here right now who create work on par with that seen in other art-burgs. I also admire the rich regionalist tradition that dates from the 1800s and how loyally locals want to support local artists.

Q: What don’t you like?

A: There is a need to collect and exhibit work by national and international artists to educate, expose and bring diversity to our city. I also want to support opportunities for our artists in other cities. We live in a global society and Indianapolis is part of it.

Q: What inspires you?

A: Beauty, good art and being able to share them with my incredible husband.

Q: Drug of choice? A: Coffee, water, wine … every day … in that order.

Q: Favorite politician?

A: I plead the Fifth.

Q: What’s the hardest thing about what you do?

A: Whether in the gallery world or now in the not-for-profit/public world, it is difficult being a conduit between parties who frequently speak different languages and come to the table with different goals. It can be so frustrating and time consuming but rewarding when you can get them all on the same page.

Q: What’s your favorite commercial now?

A: I don’t watch much TV. I do like the credit card fraud commercials where the cardholder talks with the thief’s voice.

Q: Three people you’d like to invite to dinner?

A: Jesus, so I could get the first-hand account and learn; Michelangelo for the same reason and because his slave sculptures at the Louvre make me crazy; Dolly Parton because I admire her talent and unbridled optimism.

Q: Can love be pornographic?

A: With its origin in Greece, the word pornography refers to graphic written accounts of prostitutes. Pornography or to be pornographic refers to sex, money and public consumption. Even if one doesn’t think sex is intimate and personal, I think love is.
