Of "Pure Prine," Bryan Fonseca says he "has been dreaming about this show for five years now... I'm a Prine fanatic." Fonseca has created a folk-opera about six characters who sing their way through Prine's canon.
Prine writes real stories about real people, and Fonseca understands how to dramatically integrate Prine's graceful lyrics and music into a story warming your heart with pathos, humor, loss, hopefulness and above all, caring about each other. It works as an engaging two-act evolvement through the superb musicianship of Tim Brickley, Jenni Gregory, Tim Grimm, Bobbie Lancaster, Jan Lucas-Grimm and Michael Shelton.
Perfectly situated on Phoenix's just closed "Yankee Tavern" set, the surprise debut is bottles of Upland beer realistically lubricating the cast. Fine lighting by Laura Glover centers the drama as the story progresses across some 30 songs. The only thing missing is a listing of the songs.
