The new theater company Programs will present the Indianapolis premiere of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul’s Edges, a song cycle revue that confronts the trials and tribulations of moving into adulthood and examines the search for love, commitment and meaning. Pasek and Paul were recipients of the Jonathan Larson Award (creator of RENT) for songwriting while composing the show as undergraduates at the University of Michigan.
Programs’ artistic director Matthew Cunningham (25), managing director Amanda Salazar (24) and producer Zach Rosing (26) also brought the Indiana premiere of Bare: The Musical to Indianapolis last summer for All Alike Productions. Programs emerged from that collaboration, with a mission of bringing lesser known but highly praised musicals and plays to Indianapolis audiences.
Edges performances are Jan. 2-3 at 7:30 p.m. and Jan. 4 at 3 and 7:30 p.m. at Theatre on the Square’s mainstage, 627 Massachusetts Ave. Tickets are $15 at www.programsindy.com or by calling 317-536-3892.
If you can’t afford airfare on your own, take a trip to Vegas with Theatre on the Square. The Midwest premiere of A Night in Vegas will be on stage Jan. 2-31, with a special New Year’s Eve Show and Party Dec. 31.
A Night in Vegas is made up of four zany comedies that take place in an unnamed low-end Vegas hotel. See an invasion of disgruntled male hustlers into an unsuspecting couple’s room; a fire caused by a closeted deaf smoker left alone with a blind nemesis; a man and woman in town for their son’s wedding to a man twice his age; and a young man from Colorado who wakes up in Vegas in bed with an older man and has no idea how he got there or what has happened since he arrived.
Show times are Fridays-Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 5 p.m. Tickets are $25, $20 for seniors, full-time students and military personnel. Tickets may be purchased at the box office, 627 Massachusetts Ave., by phone, 317-685-8687, or online, www.tots.org.
