New Brews: Summertime ’n the drinkin’ is social 

Here’s a sampling of pints-of-plenty for refreshing Summertime enjoyment

Deviate is tapping Barrel-aged 13% Wheat Wine for their 1st Annual 4th on the 2nd Pitch-in. Show up between 10 p.m. - 1ish a.m. with a sharing dish, serving fork, spoon and a friend or more.

Heading to Evansville? Tin Man’s newly tapped Bicentenni-Ale Hops & Hominy with hops from IndyHighBines. Staying here? Tin Man’s Csar Russian Imperial Stout is on tap at Pint Room in Carmel.

Lot 85 Hefeweizen at TwoDEEP is a classic German wheat with strong phenols [cloves] and fruity esters [bananas], spicy fruit nose and balanced malty richness. 5.2%ABV, 14.3 IBU.

Sun King downtown taproom shared newest posts: Firefly Wit, a light, refreshing Belgian Style wit [wheat] offers floral notes and a bit of bitter orange peel at 5%ABV, 15IBU. Ale/Lager hybrid Hot Lap celebrates Indy 500’s origin in 1911 when Ales and Lagers were brewed by the then active Indianapolis Brewing Company, American Home Brewing Co. and Capitol City Brewing Co. It’s dark-hued with a whiff of malt leading to a clean finish. It’s sweeter than Wee Mac 4.9%ABV, 24 IBU. Alrye’d Alrye’d Alrye’d Rye IPA gets its dankness from Michigan Crystal Hops to balance citrusy bright spiciness and malt heft.

Small Batch Hefeweizen Two is grapefruit citrusy, Three is sweeter. Brewed in Fishers, Darling Zwicky is an unfiltered German-style Lager featuring balanced malt and slight spicy hop bitterness.

  • Triton Brewing
Triton reports, “Rubber Chicken Experimental Wheat Ale (does Not Contain Actual Rubber Chicken) was our entry in Brew Brackets X and it took 2nd Place. Brewed specifically for Brew Brackets beer competition, the Rubber Chicken is a barrel-aged Belgian Wit that we blended with pineapple and soured with lactobacillus acidophilus. Then we frolicked throughout the brewery, waving around our rubber chickens, to infuse good vibes to finish the product. The Rubber Chicken clocks in at 4.6% ABV and 12 IBU’s. It is available on draft, while supplies last.”

Rock Bottom Downtown and College Park brewers each have their own version of golden-colored Summer Honey Ale with locally sourced honey from Mount Carmel Apiaries; smooth middle and crisp refreshing taste.

Indiana City is featuring the winning beer recipe from their Winter 2016 Edition Home Brewer Battle. Home Brewer Battle Champion Dave Pennington’s Toasted Imperial Tropical StoutDouble Milk Coconut Stout is a big and thick Double Milk Stout infused with toasted coconut and madagascar vanilla beans. 8.5% ABV • 50 IBU

Chilly Water’s 2nd Anniversary Beer is made with two kinds of malt, two different hops and two different yeast strains. Old favorites Barrel Aged Doppelbock, Silence Belgian Dubbel, Berliner Weiss and Coconut Porter make a return.

Scarlet Lane launched Lenore Dry-Hopped Tangerine on draft. It offers a heavy citrus flavor with the unique hop characteristics already present in Lenore. Laughing Water Australian Ale with Lime is brewed true-to-style based on the Australian Sparkling Ale guidelines. “For the end of the summer we will add a kick of lime to escort everyone through the heat and prepare for fall. Laughing Water will use all natural lime and lime rinds to create a thirst quenching, easy drinking summer beer. Laughing Water with Lime will launch in August on draft only."

Tow Yard tapped Belgian Quad with a fun description:
"In Quad We Trust": Our Quad, Who art at Tow Yard, hallowed be Thy ale; Thy will drink some, Thy will have fun at the bar because it tastes like Heaven. Give us this beer with its fluffy head; and appreciate the plum and raisin notes as those that have appreciated it before us; and lead us not into intoxication, but deliver us sobriety. 11.6% ABV 30 IBU

A handful of the experimental beers are still pouring. Head brewer Tony Fleming reports, “People seem to really appreciate the flavors and styles we were trying to achieve. I'm personally super proud with how they all turned out and it's been great to see what people think. Attached is a menu of the experimental beers mainly done on our pilot system for recipe development and trying out some crazy ideas. Tow Yard Experimental Beer Series: Lex Lugar Vienna Lager 4.7%; Get Dunk’d On Munich Dunkel 5.4%; Did I Catch an “Ator” in there? Doppelbock 8%; Guava Akbar Berliner Weise with guava 3.2%; It Burns When IPA Impound IPA with Jalapeños and Ancho Chilies; Out of the Woods Red Wine Barrel Aged American Wheat 5.4%; Wild Wild Wheat American Wild Ale with Hibiscus and Dry Hops 6.2%; Alt Disney Alter 4.5%; The World is Not a Raspberry Belgian Blonde with Raspberries 6.5%

Half Moon has Cherry/Vanilla Lambic (Belgian sour), A Belgian-style sour beer with tart cherries and whole vanilla beans. “Lambic's are spontaneously fermented wheat beers traditionally brewed in the Senne Valley [around Brussels] region of Belgium. This unique style is booming in the craft beer industry and it's Half Moon's first attempt at it,” wrote brewmaster John Templet. ABV=5.7% IBU=13 O.G.=1.050

began their 2nd anniversary week on June 4 with City Limits Kolsch featuring cracker-like malt character with minimal hop presence. Brewmaster Andrew Castner explains, “The all-important yeast flavor comes off as subtle hints of fruit and spice with a clean, dry, and effervescent finish.”

The celebration ended with with a new tradition— Crafted Mash Vol. 2. This Ryewine features orange peel and lemon peel to add complexity to the spicy rye malt and finishes with bitterness from gentian root, an ingredient normally used in cocktail bitters.

“Watch for our Uncle Buster Imperial IPA and Golden Fiddle Belgian Golden Strong coming in the next two weeks,” forewarns Castner.
