The Brewers Guild of Indiana will be holding the annual Winterfest on Jan. 26, from 4-7 p.m. at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Sixty Indiana breweries will be featured at the event along with 20 out-of-state breweries. In addition, the event will host home brewers and a keg tapping tent. Tickets are $40 for general admission and $55 for VIP.

A 10-barrel system that's a brewpub with a full service restaurant. Owners David and Brenda Simmons say they had a plan to expand their winery business with a restaurant. Since several of the wine customers are also beer drinkers they asked, "What better way to satisfy all customers than to offer fresh locally produced beer?" Their six beers, including a Summer Wheat, American Pale Ale, American IPA, Belgian Amber Ale and English Brown Ale, have been on tap at Tomlinson's and are at The Flying Shrimp Gastropub in Fishers and for carryout in growlers at the Brewpub.

Larry Libey is the vintner at Gateway Cellar Winery and also a brewer. The wine shop has been operating for some time; the brewery is a new addition. Back Alley is a limited menu brewpub/sports bar with six brews on tap that Libey is making in half-barrel batches (about 5.5 gallons). One tap will be dedicated to a non-alcoholic beverage, and another will dispense a domestic product. Growlers will be filled for take out.

Bare Hands is a small batch brewery specializing in hand crafted ales by South Bend natives Chris and Kim Gerard who say, "Bare Hands beers have developed a cult following among local beer geeks. Their beer currently is available on eight rotating taps in the brewpub, though distribution is planned in the near future.

Black Acre 's origin is one for the books - the law books. It began in a law school class in 2008 with a confession of a homebrewer, matched by a second 'fess, and a third matchup that proliferated into five who soon began to homebrew together and grew hops. A few years and very full refrigerators later the collective hobby turned serious. They plead their case as wanting "to join in the incredible craft beer revolution in Indianapolis with a focus of returning to the idea of a pre-Prohibition style neighborhood brewery. Luckily we found a wonderful partner in Irvington, which we fell in love with immediately and opened our doors Feb. 22, 2012 as a small 3-barrel (93 gallon) electric brewing system. Our focus is on brewing specialty and seasonal ales with a few stickin' around on the regular line up." The made to order food menu from locally sourced ingredients and features small plates - fries, salads, sandwiches, cheeses. The multiple partners all brew and do whatever else it takes to run a friendly neighborhood brewpub.

We'll then distribute statewide and fill growlers in the tasting room. John Mills, with over 15 years homebrewing experience, is head brewer. He has been making award-winning beer and was the Ohio Valley Homebrewers Association president in 2012. Nathaniel Cruse, an award-winning brewer with over 15 years of commercial brewing experience, is the brewery supervisor." Carson's has a lineup of six core beers.

Brewer and winemaker John McMahan tells us, "We should have some of our beer on tap in early February. We will only keg our beer to start with and sell pints and refillable growlers in our tasting room here at the winery in Seymour. We have a retail store in Indy and one in Clarksville and we will be working on licensing to have our beer in those stores as soon as possible. Once we get going, we should have a full range of beers. I would like to see us do a lot of fermenting and aging in oak barrels as well as brewing quite a few fruit beers. Our brewery is starting out small, but I believe that this will allow us to concentrate on quality and produce some unique beers."

Co-owner/brewer Steve Llewellyn describes Function as a 3-barrel nano-brewery with a small seating area and a bar with eight taps where he will "switch beers up," four taps with regulars and four that will "rotate out so I can brew what I want to be sharing at that particular time." Co-owner/chef Arlyn Llewellyn will source local ingredients for homemade appetizers, sandwiches and soups served with pints of husband Steve's brews. Nothing will be hurried in a relaxing atmosphere. Growlers will be available for take out.
Jacquie Carman informs, "We received our brewer's permit in late September of 2012 and have been selling since then. Hawcreek Brewing Co. is a microbrewery in Bartholomew County. We brew on a 1 BBL system and have four flagships on tap including: Four Founders Wheat, Doghouse Pale Ale, Chaos IPA and Little Town Brown Ale. We self distribute to the Cork Liquors in Columbus and plan on being in local restaurants soon. You can come visit us at the brewery for growler fill-ups or bombers. I am one of the four partners. Nicole Bontrager is in charge of accounting, my role is primarily PR/Marketing, Josh Bontrager and Abram Carman are our brewers though we all contribute to the recipe/brewing process."
Co-owner/brewer Amy Gentry and co-owner Justin Reisetter are opening a nano-brewery to make 31-gallon 1-barrel batches of artisan crafted ales using locally sourced and seasonal products. The brewery is described as featuring a comfortable, smoke-free tasting room for adults 21 and older, a small sales area and a very limited menu.
Owner/brewer Ray Kamstra reports, "This spring, Indiana City will begin brewing innovative beers for the craft beer lovers of Indy. Our Wheat Ale, Oatmeal Stout, and Pale Ale will be brewed year-round, and we'll release small-batch seasonal brews all the time. Housed in a pre-Prohibition-era brewery building on Indy's near east side, our taproom will be a neighborhood place with historic charm where beer lovers can fill their growlers, grab a pint, try local food trucks and enjoy local art and music. Our beer will also be on tap at select craft beer bars in and around the downtown area." This building was the Bottling House for The Home Brewing Company, a pre-Prohibition brewery that operated 1880 - 1920.
Owner/Brewer Andrew Groves says, "Planetary Brewing Co. is a 2-barrel nano-brewery set to open in the very near future when the final inspections are complete (which should happen in the next week). At full capacity, I will have 6 taps of ale in a variety of styles. The brewery is very small and does not accommodate seating or food service. At first the tap room will be open Fridays and Saturdays for sampling and growler sales. All transactions will be in-house in the beginning, until the next phase of operation, which will be kegging and distributing to bars/restaurants."
Brewers Andrew Elegante and Richard Hall are working with State Theater project manager Alec Sanderson to reclaim the State Theater with small shops. SBBW's description on facebook reads: "South Bend Brew Werks is your place to go for your home brewing needs. We have wine equipment and ingredient kits, beer equipment and ingredient kits, a multitude of grains, yeast, and hops, and other ingredients and equipment you'd need. Our knowledgeable staff can guide you through this remarkably easy process." Plans include operating a craft brewery on site along with supplying and instructing homebrewers.
Owner/brewer Nick Davidson says, "As a locally owned and operated brewery, we want to be responsible partners and creative innovators in the Tri-State area, leading the city and the state into a greater, greener future. The High Efficiency Brewing System (alias HEBS) conserves water and energy, performing the same output as other traditional methods with 40% less water and 15-20% less grain through an innovative use of the mash filter. Tin Man cans it beers because an aluminum can weighs less than one-tenth of a glass bottle, cutting down on shipping costs and because aluminum cans protect beer best during shipping and storage and cans are more readily recycled than are bottles." Tin Man offers five locally produced brews including their Circuit Bohemian Pilsner, Rivet Irish Red Ale, Alloy American IPA and 3 Gear Robust Porter.
Head brewer Cameron Fila, assistant brewer Nathan Doyle and CFO Jay Snider say, "At Union Brewing Company, our artisan ales are hand crafted two barrels at a time using time honored traditions, natural ingredients and traditional methods. Our beers are never filtered or force carbonated. They condition and carbonate naturally in casks and are hand drawn by authentic beer engines at the perfect drinking temperature to maximize all the flavors." Their "niche" is brewing cask conditioned real ales.
Wolves Head Brewing

Wolves' Head Brewery is located on the top floor of the Heorot Pub, voted as one of the top 100 beer bars in the U.S. by Draft Magazine. Owners Stan and Jeanette Stephens report, "At this time the brewery's production is limited to release at the Heorot only. Because we are brewing in small quantities we will produce a large variety of beers. We purchase as much of our hops and honey locally as possible. Beginning next year we will have our own hop vines and bee hives." Following the February 9 release of brewer Bob Cox's Imperial Russian, Wolves' Head will release a beer each Sunday.
