While most people are anticipating the annual production of A Christmas Carol at the Indiana Repertory Theatre (on stage now), don’t overlook the Upperstage. Sonja Linden’s story I Have Before Me a Remarkable Document Given to Me by a Young Lady from Rwanda plays Nov. 17-Dec. 23.
The play is told through the mentor/student relationship between Juliette Badaki, a young Rwandan woman in her 20s, and Simon Baker, a British poet in his 40s. Juliette has been referred to a Refugee Centre in central London, where she has come for help with a book she is writing about her personal experience during the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Simon’s job at the center is to help refugees with their writing; Juliette is his first client. As the play ends, Juliette speaks about her hope for her book: “So please when it is published I ask you to read it so that what happened can go a bit into your hearts and away from ours and so the people who were killed will not be forgotten.”
American Sign Language Interpretation and Audio Description will be offered on Sunday, Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. Tickets can be ordered online at www.irtlive.com or by calling the IRT ticket office, 140 W.
