Leslie Feist
Canadian singer-songwriter Leslie Feist teams up with fellow Arts & Crafts labelmate and Canadian Jason Collett to bring the best of alternative folk to Indianapolis. They will perform tonight at Birdy's. Feist's sophomore album, Let It Die, mixes elements of folk, bossa nova, jazz-pop and indie rock. With her seductive and melodic voice, honest lyrics and simple harmonies, it's hard not to enjoy her music. The songs have a somewhat feminine charisma and her storytelling is interesting. Let It Die was released in the states in April 2005 on Cherry Hill Records, which is a new sub-label of Interscope and has become a success by Canadian indie standards. The album features 11 tracks that differ from one another, providing for an enjoyable mix. She even sings in her native language of French. Feist and Collett were both part of one of Canada's best-known indie bands, Broken Social Scene. Both were solo musicians before joining BSS and have since released solo projects, which they are performing on tour. Collett's sophomore album, Idols of Exile, will be released next. It shares the same genre as Feist, but varies in its multi-instrumental approach. The lyrics are personable and his voice, warm and familiar. The entire album is a self-reflection but easy to relate to. It's fresh and enjoyable in its entirety. Feist is a mix of Bjork and Billie Holiday, while Collett is like a modern Bob Dylan. It's hard to predict exactly how the show will go, but audiences are guaranteed a uniquely Canadian experience. For more information check out and
