It’s easy enough to compare Melissa Ferrick to Ani DiFranco (and indeed, there are similarities), but the truth is, you really don’t get it until you listen for yourself.

A veteran of the coffeehouse and acoustic scenes, Ferrick has become one of the genre’s foremost performers since her debut in 1994. Her sharp, clear voice and elaborate guitar fingerpicking make her a distinctive artist. Her lyrics reflect a sense of passion, urgency and hope.

A discussion of this concert would not be complete without a mention of opening act Bitch and the Exciting Conclusion. On her own after years of partnership in Bitch and Animal, her work is politically charged, angry as hell, and savagely, uproariously funny. But don’t even think of walking in with a single ounce of political correctness or anything less than a completely open mind; one of Bitch and Animal’s more infamous songs, “WTC,” compares the Twin Towers to “looming phallic destiny” and just gets more outrageous from there (…definitely worth a listen, but not for the easily offended).
