Building on the reputation as the “amateur sports capital of the world,” the Bissel/AGB/NUVO/Indianapolis Cultural Trail Cycling Team is hosting a downtown Indianapolis race in the heart of the Mass Ave Cultural District on Saturday, August 11th from 11:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Due to the great popularity of the venue for the fans and the racers, the NUVO Mass Ave Criterium will also be the host site for the Elite Indiana State Criterium Championships.
This year’s Criterium includes the the Police & Fire Indianapolis Championships and the State Fixed Gear Championships. All of these races are fundraisers for their designated charities.
In addition to racing, the Mass Ave Criterium will also feature the New Belgium Beer Garden in Davlan Park at the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Alabama Street The Beer Garden will offer New Belgium beer and premiere spectator seating for attendees 21 and over as well as a designated area for families.
The race brings elite cycling up close and personal as riders from the Midwest compete for $5,000 in cash and $5,000 in prizes racing with speeds up to 40 mph. The triangular, fully enclosed, 2/3rds-mile course proceeds from the start/finish line at 435 Massachusetts Ave., near the Chatterbox Jazz Club, turns left onto Vermont St. at the Old Point Tavern to East St. and back to the finish line on Mass Ave.
Pedestrians and cars will be allowed to cross these streets mid-race.
Prizes will be in increments of $25, $50 and $100 and free refreshments will be provided for racers at registration. For rider’s safety the promoters will be employing 120 course marshals, 14 police officer and over 2,000 feet of street barricades to allow the racers to focus on racing. Minimum field size for full payout is 10 riders.
Full Neutral Wheel Pit by Indy Service Course
The race will be professionally supported with a neutral wheel service in the pit. Indy Service Course will provide mechanical assistance as well as Zipp wheels in case you have any problems on race day. Indy Service Course will be providing a neutral wheel pit for some great piece of mind. Let Matt worry about race-day shifting adjustments and flat tires. Professional race support for every racer, to keep you in the race.
Race-day registration will be outside the Chatterbox Café at 435 Mass Ave. Online registration will close at midnight on 8/9/12. Walkup registration and one-day licenses available on race day with a $10 late fee. Race-day registration closes 30 minutes before each race.
After the race, competitors and spectators are invited to a post-race party in the Rathskeller Biergarten, 401 E. Michigan Street, with live music, brats, beer and other beverages. The YMCA in the Athenaeum will also offer parking and free showers for racing cyclists so they can clean up to watch other races as well join us at the after-party. The YMCA shower facility will close at 10pm.
FreeWheelin Community Bikes of Indianapolis will provide a bicycle safety rodeo for children and families from 11:30am to 1:30pm on the northwest corner of Mass Ave. and Michigan St. The rodeo will teach bicycling safety and Flanner and Buchanan will distribute over 100 free children’s helmets while supplies last. FreeWheelin Community Bikes is also running the free kids races which start at 1:55pm. Please register by 1:30pm.
