“I think it’s going to be really different from what Little Voice fans are used to experiencing,” says Erika Thomas of Little Voice’s new album, Beautiful Music is for Everyone. Thomas, along with her bandmates, guitarist Mike Rittenhouse and drummer Lori Davis, is set to celebrate the release of their album with two weekend shows, the first taking place Friday at the Melody Inn. An all-ages show occurs Saturday at the Irving Theater. “We’re really looking forward to unleashing the album on the whole world.”

Beautiful Music is for Everyone is an album about music. “[It’s] about experiences we’ve had listening to music,” Rittenhouse explains. To accompany the lyrical content, the band expanded to cover many genres, adding instruments not normally associated with the members’ guitar-driven alterna-rock, so the album became a sprawling, textured aural landscape. “We’ve had a lot of our friends from the local scene come play,” he says. “There are horns and keyboard, hopefully a violin [and] sound effects.”

“Each song has its own ambience, like a room you walk into and go, ‘Oh yeah, this is different from where I came from,’” Thomas says.

Adding to the theme of music is a cover painted by local artist Emma Overman, which shows the trio — accompanied by their dog, Bear — huddled around an old Victrola. The idea of asking Overman to create art for the album originated when Little Voice saw her work while eating at the Legend restaurant in Irvington last summer. Months later, Rittenhouse met the artist after stumbling into a booth she was running at a small festival in the town of Colfax. She agreed to the project over dinner with the band.

Another important aspect of the new album was debuting it at the Melody Inn. “Dave Brown was one of the first people I gave a demo to,” Davis says. “We were a new band in the area at the time, and he was very open to giving us a try.”

“He’s always been very supportive,” Rittenhouse adds. “Even on those weeknights when we played and only three people would show up, he would come over and tell us not to give up.”
