Koalas are marsupials

Koalas are at the Indianapolis Zoo for the first time since 1994. Meet Bamba and Muuri, visitors for the summer from the San Diego Zoo, in the Forests Biome May 24-Sept. 1. The zoo features a number of animals from Australia — the native habitat for koalas, which are actually marsupials, not bears — this summer, including Australian finches, a White’s tree frog, a carpet boa and bearded dragon lizards. Catch “Koala Chat” at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily. The koala exhibit is included with regular zoo admission.

Also new this summer is the Adventure Tour: your very own behind-the-scenes adventures to meet zoo animals up close and very personal. The zoo will offer its Adventure Tour program Thursday-Sunday from May 29-Aug. 3, and Saturday-Sunday from Aug. 9-Sept. 7. Arrival times are 9:30, 10 and 10:30 a.m. and the day will last about five hours. You will meet up with your personal Adventure Tour professional guide at a pre-determined location on zoo grounds, who will take you to the first of your three behind-the-scenes visits for the day.

Among the exploration options are bathe an elephant, pet a penguin, feed a giraffe, touch a real rhino, give enrichment items to meerkats, observe an animal exam at the vet hospital, feed a walrus, kiss a sea lion, play catch with a dolphin or give an enrichment item to a bear.

The cost for the Adventure Tour is $45 per person, and zoo admission and parking are not included. The tour accommodates up to eight persons per session, and tours must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance.
