Kevin Thornton, Ball State grad and Indiana native, will perform his one-man show, Sex, Dreams, & Self Control
, June 12-13 at 8 p.m. at the IndyFringe Building. His show employs a fusion of spoken word, standup comedy and short songs to construct the story of his growing up as a homosexual in his Baptist, Southern Indiana home. Thornton is simultaneously comedic and confessional as he describes the challenges and embarrassments of dealing not only with his sexuality but with universal adolescent struggles. In a review for Cincinnati's alternative newsweekly, City Beat
, critic Mark Sterner calls Thornton's stories "alternately hilarious and heart-wrenching" and praises Thornton's songs for their ability to range from "disconcerting" to "plaintive." Thornton's genuine portrayal of his life produces a show full of sexual content and profanity -- but also of what Sterner calls "authenticity." Tickets are $10. The Fringe Building is located at 719 E. St Clair St. For more information, visit www.indyfringe.org/shows or www.sexdreamsandselfcontrol.com.
